The actual number is calculated to produce pleasant stepping values. The value here is the maximum number of steps that will be used.

Consider using PlotArea instead of setting this value directly. It will choose a number based on available display space.

This option is ignore for Axes that use a Count or OffsetCount metric. In those cases the stepping is determined by DataLimit.
